"Sunlit Cherries" watercolor class demo

"Sunlit Cherries"  8-1/2" x 10" watercolor Arches 300# cold press.  This was the demo from last Saturday's class.  I have painted this before, but thought the students would enjoy doing it.  I just focused in on the cherries rather than paint the whole plate and table cloth.... and painted it on a smaller scale.

"Cherry Kiss" Demo for Thursday evening watercolor class

This was the demo for class Thursday night. The lesson was to have fun with a background and drop lots of different colors in while the paper was still wet and let them run together.  My first background wash turned out great, but dumb me...and I told my students never to do this....I went back and tried to change a little area I didn't like.  Of course I totally messed up the wash.  So, worked on the cherries in class and then redid the background this morning.   "Cherry Kiss" 9" x 11" on Arches 300# cold press.

Cherry Harvest

This was an adorable little gal who agreed to pose for me in the midst of her work picking cherries in an orchard in Washington state. "Sunset" colors again with Alizarin Crimson in the shadow areas and Cadmium Orange in the highlights. Cherry Delight

This is another "sunset" lighting effect. Alizarin Crimson in the shadows and strong Cadmium Orange in the highlights. These cherries were picked from a friend's orchard and the plate was my grandmother's. I love using subject matter that has sentimental value. Cherry Jar

Different color combinations give the appearance of different times of day. I like to paint using "sunset" colors and "moonlight" colors. This is a moonlight scene. To create the look of moonlight, the highlights are Phthalo Green combined with white which makes a turquoise color. The shadows are Alizarin Crimson and Ultramarine Blue. I learned about this Color System from Elin Pendleton. She teaches a fabulous workshop that makes it so easy to make color selections for any time of the day. After taking her workshop I now paint with so much more ease and joy. You can see her work at www.elinart.com or follow her blog at www.elinpendleton.blogspot.com. Maraschino Red

I love painting things with shine and reflection. It's even more fun when they taste good!
