Pisces Walmartis (fish at Walmart in the goldfish tank) class demo

Watercolor 13 x 9-1/2" on Arches 300# cold press.   Fun Saturday class demo at Venus Studios Art Center. Was at Walmart buying some paint brushes for my classes and walked past the fish tanks.  Had to stop and take some pix.  The Walmart logo was reflected in the glass onto the fin.  A Facebook friend gave it the title.  SOLD

"Don't Worry Be Happy" watercolor

This is a demo started in a class a few months ago. Finished this weekend.  These boats were tied up in a busy urban harbor in South America.  I decided yesterday to turn it into a tropical scene.  Guess I'm in the mood for a vacation.  Watercolor on Arches 300# cold press  10-1/2 x 14"

Mark Adams watercolor used as teaching demo source

Demo from last Saturday's watercolor class. Mark Adams is one of my favorite watercolorists. This is a replication of his piece "Cape Foulweather" I have new students who have never painted before. One of the best ways to learn watercolor is to draw a bunch of squares and practice washes. How boring. I thought this piece was perfect to learn solid, graduated and varied washes. One time when coloring inside the lines is encouraged. Mark is a genius at getting to the basics of shape and color.  Love the simplicity. Looks simple, but definitely not simple to paint.  The sky and foreground are at least 10 layers of wash.  I was using 300#  hot press.  Man is that difficult. To me like painting on yupo.  It wants to create all kinds of swirls and twirls.  Very difficult to do a smooth wash. Love the textures it makes though.

"Into the Mist" class demo. Day 2 of Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge

This is another demo from one of last week's classes. I rearranged the boats a bit from the reference photo, and I didn't like what was in the background so, decided to turn it into fog.  I rarely can finish a painting in a  2-hour class and this was no exception.  Took another couple hours today to finish.  Watercolor on 300# Arches cold press  9-1/2" x 11"

"La Tortue" watercolor demo for class and April challenge

This is my demo from Thursday's class. "La Torture" watercolor 10" x 14. " I hadn't planned it, but it also works for the April water challenge by a great group of artists at www.artcolony.blogspot.com  The scene is from a fishing village in Punte del Este, Uruguay.  La Tortue is French for turtle, though my students were certain it meant torture.  As we know...water is not easy to paint.  I've added a Sunday class to the schedule, and there is still space for tomorrow's class if y'all can hop on over. "Deserted Isle" daily painting

The art of fun....or should it be.... the fun of art. I'm trying something completely different. I bought a ton of little 5" x 7" Raymar panels and am trying some quick studies. Since I took 7 years of French I'm going to call them etudes. All those lessons finally put to some use. For this landscape I used very liquid washes of oil and really enjoyed the freedom. Just made the scene up and called it quits after 20 minutes. Using a small panel instead of a stretched canvas removes some of the angst of feeling that you have to create a detailed masterpiece every time. This was very relaxing and satisfying. Watercolor Workshop with Eric Wiegardt

I'm taking a wonderful 4-day workshop with Eric Wiegardt, AWS NWS, author of "Watercolor Free and Easy." Today was day one. We brought our own photos of boat scenes to paint from. Eric stresses that values are more important than the color in a successful painting, so we all did value sketches before beginning. Also, today's challenge was to be more free when mixing colors....to merge colors on the palette and on the paper, rather than creating a finished color to put directly on the paper. Top left is the reference photo. Top right is the value study. We all did very loose, wet-in-wet paintings on full-sheet, 21" x 31" 140# rough watercolor paper. Eric's style is loose, yet skillfully controlled. We tried to emulate. He instructed to find the pattern first of light and midtones. Think about the design of the painting. Refer often to the value study over the photo. You can't think about design when your mind is on the photo. My work today resulted in a 2-hour, approximately 70% complete painting. Most of the values and shapes are in. Some detail in the figures and shadow strengthening are yet to be finished. All-in-all a fun and informative day. Looking forward to tomorrow.
