"Fish in a Glass" watercolor class demo inspired by Mark Adams

I love using Mark Adams' watercolors as a reference for teaching. The simple shapes and beautiful washes are great exercises for learning to paint solid washes, varying color washes and light to dark washes....the true basics of the craft.

Watercolor demo using Mark Adams' "Anemones" as a reference

Class demo from last week. Watercolor 14" x 9-1/1" on Arches cold press.   I love Mark Adams' watercolors.  They have such bold colors and simple shapes.  Fun pieces for students to practice washes and color gradations.

Mark Adams watercolor used as teaching demo source

Demo from last Saturday's watercolor class. Mark Adams is one of my favorite watercolorists. This is a replication of his piece "Cape Foulweather" I have new students who have never painted before. One of the best ways to learn watercolor is to draw a bunch of squares and practice washes. How boring. I thought this piece was perfect to learn solid, graduated and varied washes. One time when coloring inside the lines is encouraged. Mark is a genius at getting to the basics of shape and color.  Love the simplicity. Looks simple, but definitely not simple to paint.  The sky and foreground are at least 10 layers of wash.  I was using 300#  hot press.  Man is that difficult. To me like painting on yupo.  It wants to create all kinds of swirls and twirls.  Very difficult to do a smooth wash. Love the textures it makes though.
