Hummingbird Wizard
A friend of mine is often visited by his dear, departed mother in the form of a hummingbird. Another friend, Robert Joseph Ahola wrote"The Return of the Hummingbird Wizard" a novel which tells of a recently diagnosed cancer patient's encounters with a hummingbird who teaches him the meaning of life. I think hummingbirds are a special breed. Now, I have one to visit with me everyday. SOLD

Garlic for Sale
Granville Island Market in Vancouver, BC is a garden of delight for the senses. A farmers' market with fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly caught fish, freshly baked breads, gourmet meats, cheeses and oils, chocolates and fudge, soups and sauces, pies and cakes.....flowers, wandering minstrels, artwork and crafts. You can spend hours, days taking in all the wonderful sights and scents and tastes. Amid all the splendor...a simple display of garlic for sale caught my eye. Shining Knight
The palaces of Spain hold some amazing treasures from the past. Hard to imagine that people actually wore these metal suits. I believe that the troups in Iraq and Afghanistan are just as uncomfortable with their 60 pound packs in 120 degree temperatures. Hooray for our knights and heroes. Tulips on the Windowsill
This painting is a little more expressionistic than my usual style. That's one of the reasons I like this daily painting adventure. I can try other techniques without a huge commitment of time. In fact, that's one of the main reasons I started doing these mini oils. I have over 200 ideas on my list of subjects to paint...not to mention the new ideas that pop up everyday. It would take 4 years to put them all to canvas in a larger format. This gives me the ability to work on all my ideas quickly while continuing with larger pieces at the same time. Works out perfectly. This 8" x 5-3/4" oil on gallery-wrap canvas is available for $150 on my website http://www.dianemorganpaints.com/ SOLD

In the Spotlight
This is my favorite setting again...."sunset" with cadmium orange in the highlights and alizarin crimson in the shadows. Recognize the vase, Lynn?
I was reading about the daily painters, and one fellow mentioned that he set a timer for 30 minutes. That was the time allowed for his paintings, no more. I would never feel that mine are finished in that short a time. Though it might be an interesting experiment. I spend 3 to 4 hours on each. And, that does not include time spent coming up with the idea and setting up the still life. Purple Heart
I had a request for a Purple Heart painting in honor of Memorial Day. Am posting this a little early as they needed it this week. I researched the history of the Purple Heart. Here is a brief summary.
The Purple Heart is a military decoration awarded to any member of the Armed Forces serving in any capacity after 5 April 1917, having been wounded or killed. An individual is not "recommended" for the decoration; rather he or she is entitled to it. The Purple Heart is the oldest symbol and award that is still given to members of the U.S. military.
The original Purple Heart, designated as the Badge of Military Merit, was established in 1782 by George Washington —then the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The Badge of Military Merit was only awarded to three Revoltionary War soldiers and fell into disuse following the War of Independence. Although never abolished, the award of the badge was not proposed again officially until after World War I. In 1931, General Douglas MacArthur, reopened work on a new design which was issued on the bicentennial of George Washington's birth.
During World War II, nearly 500,000 Purple Heart medals were manufactured in anticipation of the casualties resulting from the invasion of Japan. To the present date, all the American military casualties of the sixty years following the end of World War II — including the Korean and Vietnam Wars — have not exceeded that number. In 2003 , there were still 120,000 of these Purple Heart medals in stock. There are so many in surplus that combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan and United States are able to keep Purple Hearts on-hand for immediate award to wounded soldiers on the field.
George Washington’s original order creating the medal includes the phrase, "Let it be known that he who wears the military order of the purple heart has given of his blood in the defense of his homeland and shall forever be revered by his fellow countrymen." This little painting is a small token to remind us of their sacrifice and to express honor for those who have suffered for our Freedom.

I really pushed the contrast and highlights on these pears. Normally white is reserved for highlights on water or glass. Using white in the highlights here makes the pears almost look like glass ornaments. Desperate Housewife
I thought this "Painted Rose" was going to be a charming little painting of a rose in an antique canning jar. But, instead it looks like an angry farm wife wearing an old-fashioned bonnet with her hand propped defiantly on her hip. Oh well.
